Sheriff Daisy and Deputy Bud made me happy, especially the part when they took pictures of the buffalos instead of shooting them.”

Story Ideas for Kids

Grownups aren’t the only ones who can make up good stories. Sometimes it’s fun to tell your mom or dad a story at bedtime or your brothers or sisters when you’re in the car. Or you may need to write a story for class. Some days stories probably pop into your head as easily as chocolate kisses melt on your tongue. But other times it can be hard to even think up one good idea for a story. So just in case you get stuck, here are beginnings of twelve cool stories. How do they end? Hey, that’s up to you. See Kids’ Storytelling Tips for other ideas.

Kids Storytelling

1) When I found Josh in his backyard he was just finishing hammering together a homemade airplane. “Want to come with me on a test flight?” he asked. “Only if I can be the pilot,” I answered.

2) It was not until our 13th birthday that my twin sister Jessica and I were allowed to take the sailboat out on Snake Lake by ourselves. We made it around the first big bend to where the water is deep and black with no problem. But then we saw a gigantic green head rise out of the water on a long reptile neck. At first the creature blinked its beady red eyes as if blinded by the sun. But then it saw us and opened its tooth-filled mouth.

3) Samantha always wanted to have a pet rabbit. But her Dad said “No, no — 100 times no! Rabbits are dirty and stupid and besides, they eat a lot.” Then walking home from school one day, Samantha saw something sad. Right next to the town woods a car had run over a mother rabbit, leaving her three babies hopping around by the side of the road.

4) There was no doubt about it — if the planet Zeon exploded that would be the end of our spaceship and everyone on it. Our only chance was to quickly fix our broken hyper-drive engine and blast out of there. Too bad that the space pirates who had locked Captain Grant in the engine room were demanding a million dollars to let him go. And even worse the rest of us had less than $100 between us.

5) John and his dad had been panning for gold in California all that long year of 1851, but hadn’t found even one ounce. Now a letter arrived from the East saying that John’s grandfather had died and the two of them had to return home right away. John’s dad was just packing the mule to leave while John washed a few last plates in the stream. And that was when John looked down and saw the nugget.

6) One fall weekend when April went camping with her Girl Scout troop, her leader organized a game of hide and seek and promised a cool prize for the girl who won. April was so anxious to win she crossed a little creek, climbed a hill, and went up a valley before hiding behind a rock. After half an hour when April figured that no one was going to find her, she headed back to camp. Too bad she went the wrong way.

7) Rob tried out for PeeWee football every year in elementary school. But the Coach always said, “Sorry boy, you’re too small and skinny to play. I don’t want you getting hurt.” But the summer before 5th grade Rob grew three inches and gained 15 pounds. When he showed up for football practice that September the Coach said, “Grab a uniform Rob and join the others. And I have one big question for you, — Can you throw a pass?”

8) Cricky and Ricky, the baby squirrels that lived in the oak tree by Rascal Creek had just learned how to jump from one branch to the next. They were so excited they began jumping extra far to show off. That was when Cricky missed the limb that hung over the creek and tumbled into the water. As Cricky grabbed hold of a floating log he yelled to his brother, “Ricky, Ricky, What am I going to do?”

9) It was the first day of summer vacation and Sandy was looking forward to going to her grandparent’s farm. It was always fun to spend summer in the country. But this year was special. Her Grandpa Frank had promised her a pony.

10) Going out in the ocean in a fishing boat for the first time is a pretty big deal for an eight-year old kid. Ben loved every minute of it, until he felt something big — way big, grab his line. For a minute Ben thought he might be pulled overboard, but then, just in time, his Dad grabbed hold of him. But the fish was so big that they were both about to be yanked into the ocean. That was when Ben’s Grandpa grabbed hold of his Dad.

11) Ashley and her best friend Sarah had been looking forward all week to going to their first concert to see their favorite band. Ashley’s mom took the girls extra early so they wouldn’t miss anything. As the concert started, the lead singer said, “We have a special surprise today. We’re going to invite one lucky person in the audience to join us on stage for the next song And that person is … the girl in the second row, in the red shirt.” As Ashley looked around, she saw that no one else in row 2 was wearing red … and everyone was staring at her.

12) Zach was really excited that his older brother Will agreed to let him take his baseball card collection to school (of course, this was only after Zach agreed to do Will’s chores for two weeks). After showing his friends the cards at recess, Zach still had time for a quick game of handball. He carefully hid the cards behind a bench when it was turn to play. But when Zach finished — the baseball cards were gone. And that was when Zach looked up to see Will walking towards him across the playground.
