“I love Ralphie The Gopher. He’s really really funny the way he reads and talks. My Dad hates gophers, but I love them.”

Storytelling Tips for Kids

1) Start with a short story.
It will be much easier to remember.

2) Pets make great characters.
If your dog, cat, bird or hamster does something funny, tell a story about it.

3) If something sad, funny, scary or exciting happens to you or one of your friends, put it in a story.

4) Vacations are almost always fun to tell about.
For example, if a bear stole your supper or your brother got lost at Disneyland, you have great story material.

Kids Storytelling

5) Make-believe stories can also be fun and easy to tell, especially if you remember you don’t have to invent everything.
For example, if you tell a story about a lion in a back yard, use your own yard—that way you only have to make up the lion part.

6) Before telling your story, practice it in your head a few times—you don’t want to forget the best part.
Or better yet, try it in front of a friendly audience such as your dog, cat or rat.

7) Another fun way to make up a story is to use your favorite characters from other stories.
For example, if you love The Lord of the Rings series you could make up your own Hobbit adventure.

8) To make sure your story is interesting, start by thinking up an exciting ending.
Then work backwards. For example, if your story ends when your spaceship saves the Earth by blasting a comet to dust, you only have to explain how you and the comet met.

9) If you know you're good at imitating certain sounds or voices—like a meowing cat, or a mooing cow or an English accent—work these into your story.

10) When you tell your story, record it.
That way you can listen later and make it better. And many years from now you’ll be able to enjoy replaying it.

11) Try finishing one of the new stories you’ll find on this site.
Just go to your favorite character’s area and click on More Fun. Whether it’s Princess Claria, Ralphie the Gopher, Clem, Rainbow of the Sioux, Sheriff Daisy or the Tibbodnock kids, you’ll find the beginning of an exciting new story ready for you to finish.
